Our First Book!
A tool to prevent cholera
Cholera, A Sickness You Can Avoid (Kolera, Yon Maladi Ou Kapab Evite)
This book, published in 2013, helps 5 - 8-year-old Haitian children and their families understand, in an easy-to-read and practical way, how they can avoid getting cholera.
It is written in simple, age-appropriate text with lots of bright, real-life photos and colorful backgrounds of kids in rural Haiti. Haitian children will learn as they read the book and look at the pictures what they can do to keep cholera away.
A discussion guide at the end of the book orients teachers, parents, and church or community leaders in talking with kids about how to avoid getting cholera.
Two more pages from the book Cholera, A Sickness You Can Avoid.
It teaches children important health messages such as drinking only safe water, washing hands often, and using latrines.
In May and June of 2013, Haiti, Let's Read! collaborated with community leaders and educators in the north Central Plateau of Haiti to deliver cholera prevention books to children in more than 44 schools. Later, more books were distributed in the north of Haiti. By the fall of 2013 almost 10,000 of these little books had made their way into the hands of Haitian families.
Take a look at the photos below for an overview of the book distribution.
